LETTER TO OUR MISSIONARIES & FRIENDS OF ITALY - March 19, 2012

Dear Elders and Sisters,

How time flies! Another General Conference is upon us together with all those opportunities which listening to the Lord’s counsel brings us. We hope that you each find reinforcement, strength, comfort, and guidance as you listen to the conference messages. We would specifically encourage you to review carefully those messages which the First Presidency and the Twelve present. As apostles, they each have specific insight and gifts, together with their stewardships, that make their remarks the most important to implement in our lives. Then we can use these messages to help guide us for the next six months.

As is the case with each April General Conference, we also have the opportunity to attend the All Italian Missions Reunion on the preceding Friday night. Unfortunately that night we will be with some our grandchildren and children out of state which means we’ll miss the reunion. We never-the-less encourage you to attend the reunion and gather either in the gym or find an unused room. You are also welcome to send us an email about who you were able to see and what news was shared.

Given that we will not be at the reunion we want to share some other items with you that will hopefully also be of interest.

This is a critical election year in the United States. While we have strong personal feelings about candidates and issues, we hope that you will each become informed and prayerfully participate if you are an American citizen. If you are not a U.S. citizen your prayers in our behalf as a nation will certainly be appreciated. There is so much yet to be done before the Savior returns and having the cooperation of many governments and peaceful environments will more likely allow the Gospel blessings to be shared with more of Father’s children each day.

When asked about the progress of the temple in Rome we have often referred people to the website www.ldschurchtemples.com (this is well done but is not an official church site, although it is maintained by a member of the Church). If you then go to the top and click on the dropdown menu called “Temples” you can then scroll down and over to Rome and click on that. At that point, in the left-hand column, towards the bottom, there is a section of “Construction Photos” that you can click on and see the progress. There are also other interesting items on the site that you might find useful. Please remember that should you visit Rome, seeing the temple site is not permitted. However as the construction continues you may be able to see some of it while passing by or at the new Porta di Roma shopping center which is across the street from the temple. ( If you didn’t hear previously, we have been told that the city will extend the Metro to this shopping center making it possible for someone to arrive at the Rome Fiumicino Airport and ride the Metro right to the temple without having to deal with the surface traffic. Un altro miracolo!)

The most common questions of course are when will the temple be completed and when will the open house and dedications be held? Unfortunately, until the First Presidency makes a public announcement we won’t know for sure. So don’t buy any non-refundable tickets  The best dates we’ve heard are in 2014 which will allow all four of the buildings and the supporting construction to be completed. There is a Church website located at http://tempiodiroma.chiesadigesucristo.it/rome-temple-details.html which shows a schematic of the temple site which includes the large bus parking area and all the buildings and gardens. Not clearly readable in the lower right corner, near the adjacent soccer fields, is a marked and somewhat triangular area. This will be a solar farm which will generate electricity for the entire complex and which the government is thrilled to see on such a project, as are we. Given all these facilities the extra time will be required.

Let me mention something else that we hope you find both interesting and faith promoting. On the above site (www.ldschurchtemples.com) there is a Church video of the temple complex (temple, arrival center to house visitor’s, stake center, and visitor’s center which will hold a family history library). As you watch the YouTube video, the visitor’s center is shown with a copy of Thorvaldsen’s “Christus” statue. We have been told that not only will there be a copy of this statue, but of the original Twelve that he did while living in Rome in the 1800s. Here is a small part of a Wikipedia entry on the Church of Our Lady in Denmark where the originals are (You can look up his name and this article should you wish to learn more. There are also pictures of the statues that we are talking about.).

The Church of Our Lady (Danish: Vor Frue Kirke) is the cathedral of Copenhagen and the National Cathedral of Denmark. It is situated on Vor Frue Plads and next to the main building of the University of Copenhagen.

The interior is likewise decorated with the twelve apostles (one in front of each of the piers of the central nave), the Risen Christ displaying the wounds in his body (in a niche above the altar) …, all in Italian carrara marble. All of these sculptures were completed in Rome by the famous Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen.

We understand that the visitor’s center copies will also be made out of Carrara marble. For those who finished their mission while we were still in Rome and therefore are not familiar with Tuscany, this is a city and quarry about 40 miles NW from where the Pacini family is from near Lucca in Toscana just off the coast. It is a famous marble that has been used in sculptures such as Micheangelo’s David (there is also a Wikipedia article on Carrara marble should you be interested). In addition to these statues, we’ve been told an interesting story about how the statues will be reproduced. The Church has been granted permission to do updated digitization of the originals by the Danish government. As a result the statues at the Rome Temple Visitor’s Center will have significantly more detail when they are carved than even that which we see in the North Visitor’s Center on Temple Square in Salt Lake City. We’ve heard a comparison between these new statues and the existing Christus statues throughout the world as being the difference between a regular and high definition picture on a TV. What a wonderful blessing that will be! We’re sure that the many thousands of Italian and other visitors from around the world will appreciate these wonderful art works done by a man that had evidently been blessed with a significant gift to do such work. And to think that these statues are now in a very real sense coming home to Rome – che gioia!

To close this thought let me add a piece from Pres. Boyd K. Packer’s Saturday Morning Conference talk from April 1995 (which you may want to reread in its entirety):

In 1976 following a conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, President Spencer W. Kimball invited us to a small church to see the statues of Christ and the Twelve Apostles by Bertel Thorvaldsen. The "Christus" stands in an alcove beyond the altar. Standing in order along the sides of the chapel are the statues of the Twelve, with Paul replacing Judas Iscariot. President Kimball told the elderly caretaker that at the very time Thorvaldsen was creating those beautiful statues in Denmark, a restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ was taking place in America with apostles and prophets receiving authority from those who held it anciently. Gathering those present closer to him, he said to the caretaker, "We are living Apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ," and pointing to Elder Pinegar he said, "Here is a Seventy like those spoken of in the New Testament.” We were standing near the statue of Peter, whom the sculptor depicted holding keys in his hand, symbolic of the keys of the kingdom. President Kimball said, "We hold the real keys, as Peter did, and we use them every day.” Then came an experience I will never forget. President Kimball, this gentle prophet, turned to President Johan H. Benthin, of the Copenhagen Stake, and in a commanding voice said, "I want you to tell every prelate in Denmark that they do not hold the keys! I HOLD THE KEYS!” There came to me that witness known to Latter-day Saints but difficult to describe to one who has not experienced it-a light, a power coursing through one's very soul-and I knew that, in very fact, here stood the living prophet who held the keys. President Boyd K. Packer, "The Shield of Faith", Ensign (CR), May 1995, p.7

Another news worthy item, at least for the Pacini’s, is that President and Sister Pacini together with Ashley and Chelsea have been granted Italian citizenship based on President Pacini’s grandfather having been born in Italy. It took a number of years to obtain this second citizenship and we are all pleased to have one more tie with those whom we came to love so dearly as a result of our service in Italy. While having dual citizenship won’t have many actual advantages associated with it, it is still meaningful for us to strengthen those ties that bind us to the mission field and those we love.

On occasion we are able to visit with some of the members in Italy thanks to modern technology. How grateful they are for each of you and the thousands that have preceded you. Please know that your efforts have had an eternal impact that will only be visible once we can view this earth-life in its entirety from a heavenly perspective.

And that leads us to our last thoughts.

We want you to all know how much we continue to appreciate your service in Italy. We hear occasionally from some who have now grown and matured and who have regrets about not having done as much as they now know was possible during their missionary service. Please remember that we realize that each of you did your very best at that time and in those circumstances. Your efforts and faith have brought about many of these miraculous events that have occurred in such a short time since your service. We appreciate you all and continue to pray for your success and well-being. We see your successes and efforts and hope that you will leave behind any feelings of inadequacy. Now is the time to use the lessons learned as you contribute in ever increasing ways throughout the world. We also hear from time-to-time of great successes and occasionally of devastating tragedies. We rejoice in those times of success and happiness and pray for the divine influence of the Comforter to be with you in those times of distress, loss, and sadness.

May the Lord continue to bless and guide each of you! You are always in our prayers.

Cari Anziani e Sorelle,

Come vola il tempo! Un’altra conferenza generale e’ arrivata insieme a quelle opportunita’ che ascotare il consiglio del Signore ci portano. Speriamo che ognuno di voi trovera’ forza, comforto, guida, e rafforzamento per aver’ascotato I messagi della conferenza. In particolare, vi preghiamo di ripassare con attenzione I messagi della Prima Presidenza e I Dodici. Come apostli ognuno di loro ha delle perspettive e doni specifici che ci possono benedire in maniere davvero eterni. Dopo aver’ascoltato ai discoursi, questi messagi ci possono guidare per I prossimi 6 mesi.

Com’e’ il caso con ogni conferenza generale in Aprile a Salt Lake City, abbiamo anche l’opportunita’ di frequentare la riunione dei missionari ritornati da tutte le missioni italiane. Questo si terra’ sul venerdi’ precedente. Sfortunatamente, noi saremo via quel weekend in visita ad alcuni dei nostril nipotini e figli fuori lo stato di Utah. Quindi non ci saremo. Pero’ vi consigliamo di partecipare se fosse possibile. Potete riunirvi o in una stanza vuota o nel centro dove saranno “I biscotti ” Considerate anche la possibilita’ di mandarci un email con dettagli della sera e le notizie che avete sentito in merito a Italia, or I nostril colleghi missionari, o altro. Per quanto riguarda l’indirizzo e tempo della riunione, e’ gia’ scritto sopra nella parte inglese.

Dato che non ci saremo alla reunione cogliamo l’opportunita’ di condividere alcune cose che speriamo avranno merito.

Questo e’ un anno d’importanza per le elezioni negli Stati Uniti. Anche se noi abbiamo delle preferenze forti su vari candidate e aurgomenti, se siete cittadini American vi esortiamo di informarvi sugli argomenti e con preghiera partecipare. Se non lo siete cittadini americani, abbiamo bisogno delle vostre preghiere. C’e’ ancora tanto da fare prima che il Signore possa ritornare. E avere il sostegno dei vari governi e una pace maggiore nel mondo ci fornira’ con una possibilita’ piu’ grande a condividere le benedizioni del Vangelo con sempre piu’ figli del nostro Padre Celeste.

Quando riceviamo domande in merito al progresso della costruzione del tempio di Roma, spesso condividiamo il sito web www.ldschurchtemples.com (e benfatto, ma non e’ della chiesa in senso ufficiale ma da solo un membro della chiesa). In cima c’e’ un menu “Temples.” Da li potete navigare giu’ per trovare Roma e cliccare su esso. Poi giu’ e sulla sinistra c’e’ un posto chiamato “Construction Photos” dove potete cliccare per vedere il progresso in un senso visuale. Sul sito ci sono anche altre cose d’interessa. Vi preghiamo di ricordare che in visita a Roma non si puo’ entrare il cantiere. Pero’ se non adesso, fra poco, quando la costruzione si alza oltre la recinzione dovra’ essere visibile in passaggio per la strada o quando si trovi al grande centro commerciale “Porta di Roma” che e’ stato costruito di fronte la piazza del tempio. (Se non avete sentito, abbiamo sentito che la Metropolitana di Roma sara’ costruita fino a questo centro negli prossimi anni. Cio’ fara’ si che dall’aeroporto di Fiumicino uno puo’ prendere I mezzi pubblici e arrivare fino al tempio senza la necessita’ di gestire il traffico sulla superficial della citta’. Un altro miracolo!)

Le domande pui’ frequente sono sempre quando tutto sara’ costruito e auando si terra’ l’”open house” o la dedicazione? Sfortunatamente fino al tempo che la Prima Presidenza dichiara tali periodi, non possiamo sapere per sicuro. Quindi, non comprate biglietti di viaggio dove non possono essere cambiati fino a quell tempo. Le date che sento piu’ frequentamente sono durante l’anno 2014 che dara’ tempo per il lavoro di finire su tutte e quattro gli edifici e le altre strutture annunciate. C’e’ anche un sito web ufficiale a http://tempiodiroma.chiesadigesucristo.it/rome-temple-details.html che dimostra un piano del sito incuso la zona grande dove si puo’ parcheggiare I pulman, tutti gli edifici e giardini. Non e’ molto chiaro ma in piano sul angolo giu’ e destro c’e’ una zona piutosta triangulare. Questo sara’ una zona di raccolta solare che fornira’ eletricitta’ per il complesso. Sia il governo che noi siamo molto felici per tale disegno. Per motive della complessita’ del sito, ci vorra’ tutto il tempo sopranotato.

Lasciate che vi informiamo di un altra cosa che speriamo sara sia interessante e che promuovera’ la vostra fede. Sul sito web sopra notato (www.ldschurchtemples.com) c’e’ un video del complesso del tempio con tutti I quattro edifici (tempio, ostello, centro di palo, e un centro visitatore che contiene in piu’ un centro genealogico). Mentre seguite il YouTube video, il centro visitatore e’ dimostrato con una coppia della scultura chiamata “Christus” dal scultore danese Thorvaldsen. Abbiamo sentito che ci sarano pure I dodici apostali originali con Paolo invece di Juda, fatto anche da Thorvaldsen che lui fecero mentre viveva a Roma nel 19o secolo insieme alla statua di Cristo. Abbiamo coppiato una piccola parte da Wikipedia sulla chiesa dove esistono le statue originali (potete cercare di piu’ sul internet se vi interessa).

“Nella capitale danese Thorvaldsen venne incaricato di eseguire la colossale serie di statue di Cristo e dei dodici apostoli per la ricostruzione della Vor Frue Kirke (l'attuale cattedrale di Copenaghen), che era stata distrutta dai bombardamenti inglesi del 1807.La serie fu eseguita in seguito al suo ritorno a Roma e non fu completata fino al 1838, quando Thorvaldsen tornò in Danimarca.”

Se qui non vedete le fotografie, potete andare al sito Wikipedia in ingles con l’argomento “Church of Our Lady” che dimostra anche delle fotografie delle statue di cui stiamo parlando.

Abbiamo sentito che pure le statue al centro visitatore saranno fatto di marmo da Carrara. In piu’ di capire che queste statue forse ci saranno, c’e’ una storia interessante su come saranno riprodotte. Il governo Danese ha dato alla chiesa il permesso di fare degli imagini digitali con una qualita’ molto superiore a quella esistente (la tecnologia non conosco solo il risultato). Quindi, le statue nel centro visitatore a Roma saranno molto piu’ dettagliati che quelli al centro visitatore su Piazza del Tempio a Salt Lake. Come paragona e’ detto che I dettagli sulle statue sono piu’ come TV di alta definizione che TV normale. Che grande benedizione sara! Sono sicuro che migliaia di visitatori dal mondo apprezzerano questi capolavori fatto da un uomo che e’ stato chiaramente benedetto dal Signore con questi talenti. Poi a considerare che queste statue saranno “di nuovo in casa a Roma” e davvero bello considerare.

E’ di questo scultore e queste statue che Pres. Boyd K. Packer parlo’ nel suo discorso di sabato matina in 1995 alla conferenza generale di Aprile. Ecco una parte – “In 1976 dopo una conferenza di area a Copenhagen, Denmark, Presidente Spencer W. Kimball ci invito’ a visitare una piccola chiesa a vedere le statue di Cristo e I Dodici Apostili fatti da Bertel Thorvaldsen. Il "Christus" e diestro l’altare. In ordine sulle fianche della cappella sono le statue dei Dodici, con Paolo in posto di Juda. Pres. Kimball spiego’ al custode anziano che al momento attuale quando Thorvaldsen creo’ quelle bellissime statue, una restaurazione del Vangelo di Gesu’ Cristo ebbe luogo in America con apostoli e profeti I quali ricevettero la stessa autorita’ antica da quelli stessi profeti e apostoli antichi visto in marmo in quella cappella. Raccogliendo I presenti piu’ vicino a se stesso, Pres. Kimball disse al custode, “Siamo Apostoli viventi del Signore Gesu’ Cristo,” e indicando Anziano Pinegar disse, “Ecco un Settanta come quelli notati nel Nuovo Testamento.” Eravamo vicini alla statua di Pietro, il quale e’ stato creato tenendo chiavi nel suo mano, rappresentando le chiave del regno di Dio. Pres. Kimball disse, “Noi deteniamo le vere chiavi, come le detenne Pietro, e le usiamo ogni giorno.” Poi succedde un’esperienza che non dimenticaro’ mai. Pres. Kimball, questo profeta cosi’ mite, si giro’ a Pres. Johan H. Benthin, del palo di Copenhagen, e in una voce da commandare disse “Di’ ad ogni prelato in Danimarca che loro non detengono le chiavi. IO LE DETENGO!” Mi venne quella testimonianza conosciuto ai SUG ma difficile a descrivere a qualcuno che non l’ha provata – una luce, un potere correndo attraverso il proprio animo – e io seppi che, in verita’, qui c’e’ il profeta vivente che detiene le chiavi.”

Un’altra notizia d’importanza, almeno per I Pacini, e che Presidente e Sorella Pacini sono diventati cittadini italiani insieme a Ashley e Chelsea per motivi della discendenza di Presidente Pacini e suo nonno Giovanni Nello Pacini. Ci volevano parecchi anni sistemare tutto ma siamo lieti essere collegati in piu’ con quelli dalle quali abbiamo sentito cosi’ tanto amore durante il nostro servizio in Italia. Anche se essere doppi cittadini non porta tante vantaggi attuali, e sempre importante per noi rafforzare I legami fra noi e coloro con la quali abbiamo servito nel campo missionario.

Grazie alla tecnologia moderna di tanto in tanto siamo in grado a communicare con alcuni membri della chiesa in Italia. Che gioia che ci porta sentire I loro voci e spiriti anche da una distanza! Ci esprimano spesso quanto sono grati per il lavoro missionario che avete fatto insieme a migliaia di altri missionari. Sappiate che I vostri sforzi hanno avuto un impatto eterno che sara’ possibile vedere completamente solo quando abbiamo la possibilita’ vedere questa vita terrena nella sua pianezza da una perspetiva celestiale.

Quello ci porta ai nostri pensieri per concludere.

Sappiate quanto apprezziamo il vostro servizio in Italia! Ogni tanto sentiamo da qualcuno che con il passaggio di tempo ha pensieri di rimpianto perche’ pensa di non avere fatto tutto il possibile durante la missione. Ricrodatevi che a quel tempo avete fatto e datto il vostro meglio e noi siamo di quel parere che avete dato il vostro meglio. Oggi vedete forse con occhi diversi. I vostri sforzi e fede hanno contribuito a creare gli eventi miracolosi che vediamo adesso in Italia dopo cosi’ poco tempo dal periodo del vostro servizio. Vi apprezziamo tutti! E continuiamo a pregare per il vostro successo e ben’essere. Noi vediamo I vostri successi nel campo missionario e speriamo che lascerete in dietro qualsiasi pensiero di mancanza. Oggi e’ il tempo di utilizare le lezioni imparate a contribuire ancora di piu’ nel far crescere il lavoro del Signore dapertutto il mondo. Di tanto in tanto sentiamo anche di grandi successi vostri e anche di tragedie. Gioiamo in quei tempi di successo e felicita’ and preghiamo per l’influenza divina del Consolatore di starvi sempre vicino in quei tempi di disaggio e tristezza.

Possa il Signore continuare a benedirvi tutti insieme al Suo lavoro in Italia. Rimanete sempre nelle nostre preghiere.

Temple Construction Officially Commenced

Cari Fratelli e Sorelle,

Siamo felici di annunciare che i lavori per la costruzione del Tempio di Roma sono ufficialmente iniziati.

Il sentimento di profonda gratitudine per questa grande benedizione che il Signore sta’ riversando sui santi a Roma e in Italia, ci spinge a chiedere a tutti i membri del palo di Roma di mostrare la nostra gratitudine unendoci in un digiuno di ringraziamento Domenica 24 Luglio 2011.

Questo digiuno ci consentira’ di prepararci con ancora maggiore consapevolezza spirituale per il viaggio di palo al Tempio svizzero la settimana successiva, e di unirci in un ideale abbraccio spirituale al fine di ringraziare il Padre Celeste per le grandi benedizioni che generosamente riversa sul suo popolo e su questa parte della sua vigna.

Vi chiediamo di continuare a servire con sempre maggiore devozione, carita’ e fede mentre ci prepariamo a ricevere ulteriori benedizioni nella Casa che il Signore sta’ preparando per noi.

Esprimiamo profonda gratitudine a tutti i santi nel palo mentre condividiamo questi momenti di grande gioia spirituale.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

We are pleased to announce that construction on the Rome Temple has officially commenced.

The profound feeling of gratitude that results from this great blessing which the Lord is pouring out upon the saints in Rome and elsewhere in Italy, invites us to ask all members of the Rome Stake to consider showing our gratitude by uniting in a thanksgiving fast on Sunday, July 24, 2011.

This fast will help us prepare ourselves, with even greater spiritual sensitivity, for our temple trip to Switzerland the following week, and to unite us in a symbolic spiritual embrace to thank Heavenly Father for the great blessings that He so generously pours out upon His people in this part of His vineyard.

We ask you to continue to serve with ever greater devotion, charity, and faith while we prepare ourselves to receive the greater blessings that the Lord is preparing for us in His house.

We express our profound gratitude to all the saints in the stake as we share these great moments of spiritual joy.

PAULA FAIRHURST

We are saddened to inform you that Sorella Paula Fairhurst, one of our former missionaries, passed away on Friday, November 26, 2010.

She and her husband Steve, served in Naples when they were on their mission.

They served from 1999 - 2001.

Sorella Fairhurst loved the Italian's and worked hard with them!

We pray that the Lord's spirit will be with Steve and his family!

Siamo tristi di informarvi che Sorella Fairhurst Paula, uno dei nostri ex missionari, è morto il Venerdì, 26 Novembre 2010.

Lei e suo marito Steve, servita a Napoli quando erano nella loro missione. Servivano 1999-2001.

Paula Lee Fairhurst, age 65, died in her home at St George, Utah, Friday, 26 November 2010. She is the wife of William S. (Steve) Fairhurst, and daughter of Paul Hoyt Hewitt (deceased) and Josette Rood Hewitt of Port Orchard, Washington. Paula was born in San Francisco, CA on 25 Oct 1945 and lived in many locations. She was raised in a career military family and married a career U.S Air Force Officer. In more recent years she and her husband served 3 missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Italy, Switzerland, and Mozambique. She leaves a legacy of love and service to God, her family, and her country. She is survived by her husband, their son Kraig (wife, Christi) of Orem, Utah; their daughter Marlee Meyers (husband, Larry) of St George, UT; 6 grandchildren and her sister Andra P. Behmer of Port Orchard, Washington. Funeral services were held at the Winchester Hills Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Tuesday, 30 November 2010. Interment will be at the United States Air Force Academy Cemetery. The family will greet and visit with Colorado friends and associates Friday evening, 3 Dec 2010, beginning at 6:00 pm at the Centennial Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5375 Centennial Boulevard, Colorado Springs, CO.

Dear Elders and Sisters (and our friends who love Italy),

Today, 10/10/10, throughout the length and breadth of our beloved land of service to the Lord, Italy, an announcement was read to all those present in Church. It indicated that the groundbreaking for the temple in Italy will be held on October 23, 2010. Presiding at that ceremony will be President Thomas S. Monson.

Sister Pacini and I wish to thank each of you once again for your faithfulness during your missions together with your fasting and prayers since that time in behalf of this and other Italian related events. Over the years these acts of devotion, coupled with those of the Saints in Italy, have both permitted the inspiration of heaven to fall upon President Monson in announcing the temple two years ago as well as to miraculously obtaining the permission to build the temple in such a short time from when the plans were submitted to the civil authorities.

We hope that you will generously thank the Lord for His influence and assistance in bringing the construction of His house to this point of beginning. In additional to our prayers of thanksgiving a renewed dedication on our part to live the Gospel to its fullest will certainly be one of the best ways of showing the convictions of our hearts. In a similar vein, to build the faith of both active and less-active members that you know during the next few years will be even more important. Take the opportunity to prayerfully encourage all to be worthy to attend the dedication once it is announced and then to regularly attend the temple to receive those blessings for themselves and their kindred dead. Your encouragement will be most meaningful as now that this work has taken another step forward the adversary will only increase his pace and desire to attack the faithful.

As you will each remember, there is almost no parking on the land selected for the temple site. As a result, the First Presidency has requested that only selected priesthood leaders attend the ground breaking ceremony. To make the proceedings available to all the Italian saints, the ceremony will be taped and rebroadcast to all the chapels in Italy the following day – Sunday October 24th, 2010. Should individuals or groups arrive and create any form of traffic congestion or disruption of public order, our first public event relative to the temple would certainly leave negative feelings towards us and in the worst case could cause even more difficult circumstances now or in the future as permission to hold a temple open house is requested. Given your spiritual maturity, we are confident that not only will each of you abide by the” invitation only request,” but that you will also with great love and tenderness encourage your many friends and Church members in Italy to do the same. We are confident that the Lord is aware of your great love for Italy and your desires and willingness to sacrifice to be there at such a wonderful time. And for those desires each will be blessed even though they are not physically present.

We hope that you will each realize that while this is the first temple in Italy, it will serve the saints in many other nations and will be a blessing to the Italian Republic as well. The Spirit of the Lord has a wonderful effect on all when they are close to it. The eventual linking of families eternally, providing courage to the youth, and having a lovely edifice build to the Lord in the “eternal city” will bring untold blessings and open the way for many more of our brothers and sisters to embrace the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ.

While there was no public indication as to the length of time necessary to build the temple, when the open house might be, design of the temple, or many of the other details, as we hear something public we will share it with each of you.

Some of you may have heard indications of this announcement from a number of other sources recently, as did we. Until the announcement was official and public though, we deferred communicating anything. We desired that the information be correct and more importantly allow the faithful saints in Italy to hear such joyous news from their local priesthood leaders first.
As you now begin to communicate this to those who are near to your hearts please remember that many of those private communications that we choose to make over the Internet at times become public. Please ensure that all that is said and suggested is positive and does not reflect negatively on any one or any group. This is a great opportunity to build bridges and reclaim the souls of those who are wandering.

This announcement comes almost 160 years to the day (19 Sept 1850), from when President Lorenzo Snow by direction of the leadership of the Church officially dedicated Italy for the preaching of the Gospel. As you will remember, he spoke of the day when the “fullness of the Gospel” would be available to all in Italy. While the blessings of heaven have certainly been available to the Italian saints in the Swiss Temple for many years, this step will certainly be in partial fulfillment of President Snow’s prophetic vision those many years ago.

May the Lord bless you always for your service in the Italian part of His vineyard.

Cari Anziani e Sorelle (e tutti I nostril amici che vivono in Italia o amano l’Italia),

Oggi, 10/10/10, in tutta l’Italia che fu la terra benedetta del nostro servizio al Signore, e’ stato annunciato che il 23 ottobre 2010, Presidente Thomas S. Monson presiedera’ alla ceremonia del primo colpo di piccone per la costruzione del tempio Italiano a Roma.

Sorella Pacini e io desideriamo ringraziare ognuno di voi di nuovo per la vostra fedelta’ durante le vostre missioni insieme alle preghiere e ai digiuni fatti in favore di questo, e altri simili eventi spirituali che riguardano l’Italia. Attraverso gli anni, questi atti di devozione, in sostegno a quelli dei santi in Italia, hanno permesso I cieli a inspirare Pres. Monson prima di annunciare del tempio due anni fa e in modo miracoloso di ottenere il permesso di costruire in un period cosi’ breve da quando sono stati presentati I piani di costruzione alle autorita’ civili.

Speriamo che ringrazierete abbondantamente il Signore per la Sua influenza e assistenza nel portare a questo punto di inizio la costruzione della Sua casa a Roma. In oltre le nostre preghiere di ringraziamento, una ridedica da parte nostra a vivere pienamente il Vangelo sara’ certamente un modo accetabile mostrare al Signore gl’intenti dei nostri cuori. In parallelo, rafforzare la fede dei membri di sia gli attivi che I meno attivi che conoscete in questi prossimi anni sara’ ancora piu’ importante. Approfittate dell’opportunita’, con preghiera, a dare corraggio a tutti rimanere o diventare degni di partecipare alla dedicazione del tempio una volta che viene pubblicato la data e poi di ricevere le benedizioni per loro stessi o I loro defunti di famiglia. Il sostegno che darete sara’ molto importante perche’ adesso che i lavori cominciano sulla costruzione, l’avversario comincera’ con piu’ intensita’ a cercare o a sviare o distruggere I fedeli.

Come ricorderete, non esiste quasi nessun parcheggio sul terreno. Come risultato, la Prima Presidenza ha chiesto che vengono di persona alla ceremonia solo alcuni dirigenti del sacerdozio nominato. Per permettere a tutti I santi di partecipare in qualche maniera, la ceremonia sara’ registrata e in seguito ritrasmessa il giorno successivo, 24 ottobre 2010, a qualche punto dopo le riunioni normali a tutti I membri Italiani nelle loro capelle. Se individui o gruppi dovessero arrivare in piu’ di quelli invitati e creare qualsiasi forma di difficolta’ col traffico, parcheggio, o altre forme di disordine pubblica, il nostro primo evento pubblico per il tempio potrebbe lasciare sentimenti molto negative verso di noi. Quei sentimenti negativi in seguito potrebbero causare difficolta’ nel futuro quando cercheremo il permesso per la casa aperta. Data la vostra maturita’ spirituale, siamo sicuri che seguirete questi consigli e in piu’ con grande amore e tenerezza cercherete di influenzare tutti I vostri amici a fare altretanto. Siamo convinti che il Signore benedira’ ognuno che avesse il desiderio di esser presente anche se per obbedienza non ci vanno.
Speriamo che ognuno di voi si ricordera’ che anche se questo e’ il primo tempio in Italia, servira’I santi in molte altre nazioni e sara’ una benedizione a tutti I cittadini Italiani. Lo Spirito del Signore ha un effetto meraviglioso a qualsiasi persona quando viene incontrato. In seguito suggelare le persone in famiglie eterne, fornire I giovani grande corraggio di spirito, e avere un edificio bellissimo costruito proprio per il Signore nella “citta eterna” porteranno benedizioni infinite e aprira’ la via per molti di piu’ dei nostril fratelli e sorelle ad abbracciare il Vangelo Restaurato del Signore Gesu’ Cristo.

Anche se niente di pubblico e’ stato detto in merito ai tempi di costruzione, quando si terrebbe una casa aperta, il disegno del tempio, o altri dettagli simili, appena che sentiamo qualcosa pubblica vi faremo sapere.

Qualcuno di voi forse avra’ sentito indicazioni di questo annuncio in anticipo e vi domanderete perche’ noi non abbiamo detto niente prima. Anche noi abbiamo sentito tale voci ma abbiamo deciso di aspettare che le cose fossero ufficiali e pubbliche. Volevamo anche assicurare che tutti I membri fedeli avessero il priveleggio di sentire queste notizie gioiose dai loro proprio dirigenti del sacerdozio per la prima volta.

Adesso che comunicate questo a quelli che vi sono vicino al cuore, per favore ricordatevi che molte volte comunicazioni privati su Internet saranno a conoscenza pubblica col tempo. Assicuratevi che tutto cio’ che dite in merito a questo evento cosi’ benedetto sia positivo e che non risulti in nessuna considerazione negativa riguardo una persona o un altro gruppo. Questo e’ una grande opportunita’ di costruire ponti con gli altri e ritrovare le anime che si sono perdute per le strade del mondo.

Questo annuncio viene quasi 160 anni dopo del giorno (19 Settembre 1850), da quando Presidente Lorenzo Snow per incarico delle autorita’ della Chiesa ufficialmente dedico’ la terra d’Italia per la predicazione del Vangelo. Come ricorderete, parlo’ del giorno quando “la pienezza del Vangelo” sarebbe disponibile a tutti in Italia. Anche se le benedizioni di cielo sono stati presenti attraverso il tempio Svizzero per molti anni, sembra che la costruzione di questo tempio sara’ almeno in parte da seguire quella visione profetica cosi’ tanti anni fa.

Dear fellow-workers in the Lord’s Kingdom,

It is with profound gratitude that we share with you the news that the Council of Ministers on Thursday the 13th of May in Rome approved the Church’s request to be regarded as a religion/church in the eyes of the Italian Republic. While many of you may have already heard from other sources, we wanted to share this momentous step towards full recognition in case you had not heard. This movement from charitable foundation status to that of an official religion/church is a very significant one for the reasons we have noted in the past.

We understand that this decision must yet be published in the official Parliamentary journal so a few simple actions need to be completed but this was a significant hurdle which we have been waiting for now for many months if not years. I hope we will each take the opportunity to offer a special prayer of thanksgiving to the Lord for His loving kindness in this regard.

Thank you also for your past faith and prayers. They have obviously helped! Please also know that your personal example during your mission has allowed the Church to be seen as a group of dedicated and law abiding people who profess the Lord Jesus Christ not only in word but in deed.

A continuance of your faith and prayers in behalf of the temple’s construction, and all that is involved with that, will also be noted on high.

May the Lord continue to bless each of you and your families!

Cari fratelli nel lavoro del Signore,

Se non avete gia’ sentito, e’ con una gratitudine profonda che condiviamo la notizia meravigliosa che “Il Consiglio dei Ministri si e’ diunito oggi, alle ore 10,00 a Palazzo Chigi, … Il Consiglio ha approvate sei disegni di legge che regolano I rapport fra lo Stato e alcune confessioni religiose, a sequito delle Intese gia’ stipulate con ciascuna di esse. Si tratta della Chiesa di Gesu’ Cristo dei Santi degli Ultimi Giorni …” Questo passo da ente patrimoniale a religion/chiesa e’ molto importante per le ragioni che abbiamo notato nel passato.

Sappiamo che ancora questo atto dev’essere publicato in parlamento secondo le leggi e mezzi determinati anche per legge. Cionondimeno, questo e’ un passo notevole che abbiamo aspetatto per mesi se non anni e vale una preghiera di gratitudine particolare da parte di ognuno di noi per la misericordia del Signore.

Grazie per le vostre preghiere e la vostra fede del passato. Sono ovviamente state utili! Sappiate pure che I vostri esempi in campo di missione ha dato al publico Italiano l’opportunita’ vedere che come gruppo siamo dedicati a servire e osservare le leggi. In piu’ che siamo un popolo che non solo dichiara la esistenza del Signore Gesu’ Cristo, ma che cerchi seguire il Suo esempio.

Continuate a pregare ed esercitare la vostra fede in merito alla costruzione del tempio e tutto cio’ che sia coinvolto in essa. Siamo altretanto sicuri che tale atti saranno anche notati in cielo.

Tomorrow morning, barring unexpected urgent government business, the discussion of the Church becoming a religion in Italy is scheduled for debate in the Council of Ministers. This will occur according to the agenda at 1:30 AM Mountain Daylight Time. TWO MISSIONS IN ITALY

To better serve the growing Church, a number of mission boundary changes have been announced in the Church News this weekend.

As of July, there will be 10 new missions and 14 will be combined. Italy’s Catania Mission will be combined with the Italy Rome & Italy Milan Mission. As you can see below, this will be one of many combinations to allow for accelerated growth within Europe and throughout the world.

We haven’t heard what the new official boundaries will be, but assume that there will be some impact beyond the addition of the Catania Mission to the Rome Mission otherwise there would not have been mention of the Milan Mission being involved.

This is truly a positive step and shows the great growth in Italy, as so many new Stakes have been formed over the past few years.
Each new stake reduces the need for a mission president to give guidance to districts. The maturity of stakes allows members to do more finding work thus requiring fewer missionaries. We have also heard that great progress is being made in Sicily and maybe a stake will be possible there within a very short period of time as well.

As long as we are sending this message out, maybe a word on the Rome Temple status. In visiting with some of the Saints in Rome, it appears that great progress continues to be made in gaining the necessary approvals to commence construction. Evidently, many more of these approvals have been received since we last communicated. Many familiar with the normal governmental approval process in Rome are amazed at how much progress has been made – obviously the Lord is most interested in this house that will be built to His name and glory. Some have said that normal approvals take from 5 – 7 years. We are not yet at one year, (since the Temple plans were first submitted to the city) and most of the approvals needed have now been granted. I do know that the Rome Stake Presidency has once again asked the members to remember all the governmental officials that are involved in their fast for March. Should you wish to participate I am sure it will be greatly appreciated by the Saints in Rome as well as the Lord. While no timelines exist, apparently within a few months all the approvals could be in place. I would assume that once the city grants the permits to start construction we will be able to see what the temple will look like. My former supervisor in the Church Office Building is now the Church’s Director for Temporal Affairs in Europe. He has seen the temple plans and while he was not at liberty to share them with me, he said that “the temple will be beautiful.” As we have so often discussed, while we know the building will be beautiful, the blessings that come from the ordinances performed within the temple that unite families eternally will be the true unseen beauty of the building.

Once again, the mission boundary changes, new stakes, and the progress on the temple construction approvals are evidence of the great impact that each of you had on the Lord’s work in Italy. The Church not only keeps growing, but grows at an ever increasing pace. Thank you again for your faithful service. Accepting the Lord’s call and doing your best has laid the foundation for this and so many other miracles in Italy.

With gratitude for your service please know that you remain constantly in our prayers!

A scopo di servire meglio la crescita della Chiesa, sono stati annunciate parrechi cambiamenti ai confini di missioni nel mondo questo weekend.

A luglio, ci saranno 10 nuovi mission e 14 saranno incorporate in altre mission gia’ essistenti. In particolare la missione di Catania sara’ inclusa nelle missioni di Roma e Milano. Come potete vedere da cio’ che seque, questo cambiamento sara’ uno dei tanti sia del mondo che dall”Europa.

Non sappiamo ancora i confini precisi, ma assumiamo che ci sara’ un’impatto oltre l’inclusione della Missione di Catania nei confini della missione di Roma, altrimenti non ci sarebbe stato menzionato la missione di Milano nell’annuncio ufficiale.

Questo e’ veramente un passo positivo e dimostra grande crescita e maturita’ in Italia. Ovviamente segue le formazioni di tanti nuovi pali negli anni recenti in Italia. Ogni nuovo palo reduce la quantita’ di tempo e risorse che un presidente di missione deve investire per gestire I distretti. La matturita’ dei membri permette anche meno missionari a fare il lavoro perche’ loro fanno molto piu’ lavoro di “ricerca” per dare ai missionari amici ad insegnare. Abbiamo anche sentito che il lavoro procede bene in Sicilia e forse un palo li’ sta sul orrizonte in breve tempo!

In tanto che mandiamo queste notizie, forse conviene includere qualcosa in merito al Tempio di Roma. Nelle chiachierate che faccio telefonicamente con I membri a Roma, sembra che grandi passi sono stati fatti nel passato recente. Incluso in questo sono nuove approvazioni dai vari entita’ del governo civile a Roma da quando ci siamo sentiti su questo argomento l’ultima volta. Di sicuro, il Signore si e’ interesato di persona a portare a fine questo meraviglioso progietto che sara’ una casa dedicate al Suo nome e gloria. Quasi tutti dicono che un progietto di questa complessita’ e grandezza di solito richiede dai 5 a 7 anni ricevere le approvazioni. Da quando I piani sono stati dati al commune l’anno scorso siamo a solo 10 mesi e quasi tutte le approvazioni sono in mano. So anche che la presidenza di palo ha chiesto ancora che I membri del palo di Roma includono nelle loro digiuni per marzo la richiesta al Signore di continuare a muovere questo lavoro e di benedire tutti I dirigenti civili con cuori aperti allo Spirito affinche’ possano sentire la necessita’ di affrettare questo lavoro. Sono sicuro che a voi pure l’invito a digiunare esiste. Siano I membri che il Signore stesso saranno grati per qualsiasi vostra sforza di fede in favore di questa grande opera. Anche se date precise per iniziare il lavoro di costruzione non esistono ancora, e’ la nostra speranza e’ che non ci vorra’ tanti mesi ancora prima di aver il primo colpo di piccone. Assumo pure, che appena che la citta’ da il permesso di costruire, saremo in grado a vedere come sara’ il disegno. Il mio vecchio capo a lavoro e’ stato trasferito di recente a Francoforte dove funge da direttore di affair temporali per la Chiesa in tutta l’Europa. Lui ha visto I piani per il tempio e anche se non era libero dimostrarmeli, mi ha detto che “il tempio sara’ bellissimo!” Come abbiamo discusso cosi’ tante volte, anche se sappiamo che il tempio di fuori sara’ bello, la bellezza piu’ profonda sara’ legato alle benedizioni dal interno del tempio dove le ordinanze eterne che riuniscono famiglie verrano sequite.

Una volta in piu’, I cambiamenti di confine, I nuovi pali, e il progresso nell’ottenere le approvazioni per costruire il tempio dimostrano l’impatto che ognuno di voi ebbe nel costruire le fondamenta del lavoro del Signore in Italia. La Chiesa non cresce soltanto in Italia, ma cresce sempre piu’ rapidamente. Grazie di nuovo per il vostro servizio fedele e di cuore. Di aver accettato la chiamata del Signore a service e poi a dare il vostro meglio sono le attitudini che hanno permesso questa crescita’ e gli altri miracoli spirituali che vediamo in Italia.

New missions 10 announced in seven areas

Some missions combined with neighboring missions

To better align resources and adjust to the ever changing needs of the Church, 10 new missions will be organized in July, while 14 other missions will be combined with neighboring missions. The resulting number of missions will be 340.

Europe Area

Combine the Germany Hamburg Mission with the Germany Berlin Mission, with headquarters in Berlin.

Combine the Switzerland Zurich Mission with the Germany Munich/Austria Mission, and portions of the Germany Frankfurt Mission. The resulting mission will be named the Alpine German-Speaking Mission, with headquarters in Munich.

Combine the Ireland Dublin Mission with the Scotland Edinburgh Mission. The resulting mission will be named the Scotland/Ireland Mission with headquarters in Edinburgh.

Combine the Italy Catania Mission with the Italy Rome and the Italy Milan missions.

Combine the Spain Bilbao Mission with the Spain Barcelona, Spain Madrid and Spain Malaga missions.

There are many "Mormon Myths" going around right now, about the Temple in Rome! Please be very careful what you forward on to others!

Friends:

Many of you have received various e-mails describing inspirational events relating to the establishment of the temple in Rome. While the basic spirit of those e-mails is correct (i.e., that the hand of the Lord is guiding every aspect of the project), there are several inaccuracies that I should correct.

Specifically, none of the Catholic leaders we met said "We will support you in any effort you want because of your support of Proposition 8 in California." Not only does the Catholic Church have no official decisional role with regard to the Rome temple, it has not made any commitment of support, whether because of Proposition 8 or otherwise.

What is true is that at the reception in Rome in January 2009 (where we fortuitously met Catholic leaders), there were several Catholic officials who were aware of the Church's work in California on Proposition 8 and who thanked me as a representative of the Church for that good work. They were grateful that the Church and its members had acted so vigorously and well in defense of our common principles. Indeed, since then it has become clear that the Church has obtained greater credibility and respect worldwide because of what our members did in California. That valiant work has opened doors of cooperation with other faith groups and like-minded organizations that has already benefited the Church.

There is no question that the Lord's hand has been evident at many stages of the temple project in Rome, from the initial purchase of the property many years ago, to the necessary rezoning that occurred last year, to our smooth dealings with the city of Rome this year in seeking building permissions, to our encounters with Cardinals and others within the Catholic Church who have been respectful and interested. It has been a faith-building privilege to participate in and to share some of the details of that process.

But please keep in mind that our efforts to obtain the necessary building permissions within the Rome City Administration have not come to full fruition and remain at a delicate stage. Consequently, we need to be cautious and judicious when we discuss what is happening there and should take care not to spread incorrect information.

Dear Elders and Sisters,

As another holiday season begins, we express to you once again our gratitude for the association we share having served the Lord together in Rome. Sister Pacini and I hope that as you hear of progress being made by the Church in Italy, and especially as the Rome Temple moves forward, that you will realize that you were a part of this great work – an important part!

During the Thanksgiving period I had occasion to telephone President DeFeo, the stake president in Rome. He indicated that while significant progress is being made in obtaining the necessary approvals to commence building the temple, the building permit process is not complete. As you can imagine for any city of over 5 million inhabitants, the city must take many aspects of a major construction project into consideration prior to giving its approval. President DeFeo indicated that all the members of the Rome Stake have been asked to include the temple approval process and those so involved in their fast for December. Evidently additional meetings and work will be scheduled during December and the Lord’s help will be greatly needed. Sister Pacini and I have invited our family and friends to participate in this fast as well. As fellow laborers, we extend that invitation to you and those that you feel would find this a meaningful event to participate in. We also remind you to thank the Lord for all His help to this point. Without His direct intervention, we would not be seeing the great strides that are being made.

You may also hear many faith promoting stories about the progress of the temple. I would suggest that unless you hear those directly from the person involved or a member of the First Presidency in a public forum, that it is better to keep the warm feelings such accounts give us to ourselves and not pass them on. It is always easy to have a story change as it is passed along, and we would not want to embarrass anyone or otherwise slow down the work unintentionally. Knowing by the Spirit the Lord is pleased to build a temple in Rome is really the only thing we need to dwell on right now.

President DeFeo shared that the most recent stake conference in Rome was a great spiritual feast for all that were involved. In addition to the spirit that was present in all the meetings, he felt particularly grateful for the many new families that have joined the Church in the last six months and those that have come back into activity. He said that almost every ward and branch has had full families and others either come into the Church or back into activity or both. What a great report and tribute to those missionaries currently serving together with all the local leaders and members.

President DeFeo also indicated that he has seen the plans for the temple and that they are beautiful. He is not at liberty to share them at this point, but once the city and the area presidency have given their approvals he will share the plans with all of us unless the Church has made them publically available through some other means. He also expressed his thanks for the many prayers which continue to be offered for him, the other local Church leaders, and those involved in granting the approvals. Isn’t it wonderful how the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ can give us common purpose in a world that is so filled with division and strife?

Please know that you each remain in our prayers. We pray especially at this time of year, that despite the trials of life, that this Christmas season will bring you great joy as we each reflect on the eternal blessing which Christmas helps us remember –

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)

Questi sono tempi di grandi miracoli per noi tutti mentre vediamo il Regno di Dio avanzare, e siamo invero testimoni di come il Signore operi direttamente con piccoli mezzi per far avverare grandi miracoli. Siamo felici di poter dire apertamente che i cuori si stanno davvero aprendo e che questi sono giorni di miracoli. Come preannunciato durante la recente conferenza di palo chiediamo a tutti i santi del Palo di Roma di unirsi ancora in un digiuno speciale in occasione della prima domenica di digiuno di Dicembre e di dedicarlo all'edificazione del Tempio di Roma. Chiediamo ancora una volta di esercitare una fede possente come santi e di essere uniti in questo sforzo spirituale.

L'Aquila, Italy - Earthquake Fund

We want to thank you all for your kindness, concern and willingness to help those who have been affected by the L'Aquila earthquake. The church is very involved (as they always are) in helping those who have lost their homes and other personal things. After communication with the local priesthood leaders, we have been counseled that the best way for you to help would be to donate money on Sunday, in your ward/branch, on a regular Donations Slip. Place the contribution under OTHER and write 'L'Aqulia, Italy - Earthquake Fund'. Any donations other than money would be difficult to get into the area right now, but with the money, local leaders can purchase the items that are needed! Please continue to keep Italy in your prayers, together with missionary work, the building of the Rome Temple and for those in L'Aquila! Lord bless you all and GRAZIE! President & Sister Pacini

Vogliamo ringraziare tutti voi per la gentilezza, la preoccupazione e la volontà di aiutare coloro che sono stati colpiti dal terremoto a L'Aquila. La chiesa è molto impegnato (come sempre) per aiutare coloro che hanno perso le loro case e altre cose personali. Dopo aver communicato con i dirigenti locali si raccomanda che il miglior modo per aiutare sarebbe donare soldi attraverso il proprio rione/ramo uttilizando il cedolino (donation slip) normale per le offerte. Dove il cedolino permette la possibilita’ donare ad una cosa speciale in fondo, si scrive “L’Aquila, Italy – Earthquake Fund.” Con il denaro i dirigenti del sacerdozio possono acquistare cose necessarie e consegnarle direttamente ai bisognosi.
